A team of seven children from New Mills Primary School took part in the Year 5 and 6 Key Steps Gymnastics competition which was held at New Mills Leisure Centre on the 17th May.
The team were Peter Walker, Erin Murray, Emma Beattie, Skye Collier, Lucy Jennings, Suzi Edwards and Beth Longshaw. This is the first time that the school have participated in the Key Steps Gymnastics event and it gave pupils the chance to experience a real Gymnastics competition.
Each team member had to complete three different elements: a Vault, A Floor Exercise and a Body Management routine. The elements were scored and the total combined to give an overall score for the team. The team had worked very hard to practise their routines – the hardest part was making sure they included all the compulsory elements in the correct order!
The standard of the competition was very high with a number of schools bringing club level gymnasts. In the final result New Mills Primary came 1st overall with four of our gymnasts coming in the top 10 individually – a fantastic result for our first attempt. The team showed focus, composure and strength in their routines and also demonstrated great team work and sportsmanship.
