To coincide with the first day of Wimbledon, 13 schools from the High Peak area competed in the Area Mini Tennis Competition at Glossop Tennis Club. The teams consisted of two boys and two girls. Games were played on a half size court with simplified rules and scoring.
New Mills Primary took two teams to the event from Year 3 and 4. Some children taking part played tennis at clubs outside of school but many had never played a competitive game of tennis before. It was a great experience for them to play on a real court with full size rackets and balls.
New Mills Primary teams played in separate leagues for the event with both teams finishing second in their group. New Mills A team then went on to win the playoff tournament so finished in third place – a great result considering our experience in the game.
The tournament was won by Dinting Primary and Padfield Primary came second.
The children were great ambassadors for the school at the event and played with courage and determination. Mrs Fisher would like to give a special mention to Cameron Beattie and Luke Kelly for great performances and consistent results. Other team members were Hazel Ashworth, Willow Gell, Emily Heyes, Adam Jackaman, Thomas Longshaw and Lizzie Walker.
